Make a Junk Journal Workshop 4/30
DATE: Thursday, April 30th
TIME: 5:30pm-8:00pm
WHAT: Make a "No-Sew" Junk Journal
FOCUS: Creative reuse, tactile storytelling, and basic bookbinding
Create a junk journal from re-used materials and vintage maps. Junk journaling is a creative and sustainable way to turn everyday "junk"—like mail, packaging, and scrap paper—into a deeply personal craft. There is no right or wrong way to make a junk journal. Instead of starting with blank pages, junk journals embrace the tactile experience of textures, patterns, colors. It's also a great way to collect memories by using ephemera from your daily life or travel in unique ways.
THE AGENDA
-
Constructing the Cover
We will provide packaging boxes to construct your covers and old maps to cover them with. If you'd like to bring something meaningful to you to use instead, here are a few ideas:
-
Recycled Cardboard: Cereal, cracker boxes or similar cardboard that is sturdy yet flexible.
- Book Covers: vintage books, old used books or notebooks
-
Fabric or Felt: Soft covers made from upholstery scraps or old clothing
2. Creating signatures and binding them to the cover
Signatures are folded sheets of paper nestled inside one another. We will be "binding" our signatures with no-sew elastic loops while exploring alternative methods you can try at home.
3. Gathering the "Junk" (The Pages)
Examples of items you can use or bring to create the guts of your journal.
-
Functional Paper: any type of loose, decorative or notebook paper
-
Ephemera: Used envelopes, brown paper bags, old maps, postcards, prints
- Found Items: Ticket stubs, receipts, packaging (ex. tea bags), fabric, lace, tape
Included in workshop
- Packaging boxes, old maps and supplies to create your covers. We will supply some ephemera for the inside of your journals, but please bring items that are meaningful to you.
-
Instructions with ideas and inspiration to take home.
